As high school students, you are on the brink of setting out on a great journey toward your future. It’s a super exciting time in your life where dreams are big and possibilities are endless!
Sometimes facing those dreams and opportunities can feel overwhelming. There are so many choices to make in a very short amount of time. We’ve all been there. It’s a rite of passage, but such an exciting time in your life’s journey.
Let’s dive into some nifty time management tricks to help you set some S.M.A.R.T. goals and you will be rocking it like a star! 🌟 Ready to get SMART?
S = Specific
Being specific encourages you to think more clearly and precisely. For example, instead of saying, “I want to do well in school,” how about more specifically saying “I want to get a B or higher in math this semester” instead? It’s about knowing exactly what you want, then setting a plan in motion to do it. This is something you can do, right? Right!
M = Measurable
This means you set your goal on something you can measure so you can track it to see how your progress is going. So, if you want to read more, set a goal such as “I want to read two books every month.” Then mark them down each time you read one. It’s way more satisfying to see your progress as you go, and it’s motivating, too!
A = Achievable
Dream big—but keep it real. Becoming an influencer with a million followers by next month might be a stretch, but you can totally ace that computer class. Small wins like this keep you on track for bigger wins.
R = Relevant
Align your long-term goals with what matters most to you. If you love art, aim to improve your drawing skills instead of mastering a subject that doesn’t spark your interest. Keep in mind that yes, you still have to study the other subjects, too. There will come a time, sooner than you realize, that you have cleared the way to work toward your dreams— if you stick to your plan.
T = Time-bound
Every goal needs a deadline. There is no motivation like a deadline! For example, if you want to save money to go to a special event, figure out how much you need to save each month to reach your goal in time for the event. Always give yourself a set timeframe and stick to it.
Putting SMART Goals to Work for YOU
What’s Most Important?
Figure out what’s most important and tackle those tasks first. Use a cute planner or a cool app to keep track of everything from homework to hangouts.
Eat an Elephant
Big projects can seem scary. Break them into smaller steps. Let’s say you have a science project.
- Start with some research
- Write a draft
- Create your presentation
*Do you know how to eat an elephant? One bite at a time! One step at a time, and you’ve got this!
Use a Calendar or Planner
Calendars or planners are your BFFs for staying organized. Whether it’s a fancy planner or calendar on your phone, use it to schedule study time, club meetings, and fun and down time, of course. Seeing everything in one place helps to manage your time better.
Let’s Make Mini Deadlines, Not Many Deadlines
Give yourself plenty of time to finish tasks without the last-minute rush. Set more mini deadlines for your larger projects. Just keep things moving smooothly.
Don’t Overdo It
It might seem like you’re getting more done, but multitasking can actually slow. you. down. Not to mention what overwhelm can do as we discussed earlier. You don’t need that. Focus on one thing at a time, finish it, then move on. You’ll work faster and make fewer mistakes, and enjoy your life much more. And isn’t that what it’s all about? Yes. Yes, it is. So take those breaks. And take deep breaths.
Just Remember…
Life doesn’t always go as planned. And it’s okay. If you need to take a break, do it. Always be willing to walk away from what’s not working.
By setting SMART goals and crushing these time management techniques, you’re setting yourself up for success. Stay focused and believe in your awesomeness. Your dreams are totally within reach, and with these tips, you can make them happen. Keep shining, and remember, you’ve got this!
